In 1950, Geroge W. Kukar and his brother planned to open their own deli. George built a two story, 40-by-40 foot building found at 395 Almaden Ave.
His brother failed to supply the money needed, so George Kukar rented the kitchen to Lorraine Riddle. While Riddle ran the kitchen, Kukar worked in the bar. Kukar officially hired Riddle to work for him and Kukar's House of Pizza was Born. The two would continue working together over the next thirty-five years.
In 1976, the city of San Jose wanted to move Almaden Ave onto the land where House of Pizza was located. Rather then totally destroy the restaurant, the building was moved 75 feet to acommodate the new street. It still held the address of 395 Almaden Ave. Finally, in 1985 the restaurant was placed at 527 Almaden Ave because of the new San Jose Convention Center.
George W. Kukar passed away November 2004 at 87 yrs. His son George Kukar handles the day-to-day business of the establishment. In addition to Kukar's son, his three daughters, Joan, Patty, and Sandy help to run the restaurant.
House of Pizza sets the stage for a family business. Providing great food, good times,fond memories and history, has made the restaurant a San Jose Institution.
Running in another sixty years would not be out of the question.
